Another 165 localities in Ukraine renamed as part of the decolonisation of place names

On 5 June 2025, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution on renaming certain localities whose names contain symbols of russian imperial policy or do not meet the standards of the state language (Draft Law No. 11363).

With this resolution, as part of the decolonisation of place names, the Parliament renamed 1 city, 18 settlements and 146 villages. The full list is in the draft resolution.

Ukrainian MP Roman Lozynskyi mentioned this.

He also said that MPs had passed a resolution (Draft Law No. 13259) to rename some localities, renaming 19 more villages and settlements following the general procedure.

To date, a total of 184 localities in Ukraine have been renamed.

For reference, legislative changes regarding the decolonisation of toponymy came into effect on 27 July 2023. Hundreds of localities have been renamed in Ukraine in 2024. Further information on the decolonisation of toponymy can be found here.
